Hello all

Nice build but probably wont do much for the reputation of lasers in the public perception.

Still, a nice project.

1 megawatt my ass. You'd need to be pulling power from every single outlet in your house for at least a day to make 1Mw.

Agreed, it shouldn't be too hard, just make a black spot on the plastic where you want to burn the hole through.

I know the gun used an Nd:YAG laser, but does anyone know the specs? I actually just found an Nd:YAG laser rod on a surplus website and posted a topic on it, then I saw this and was wondering if it could be used to a similar end.

Yeah I am in the same boat as you...rods of Nd:YAG could be quite interesting...

Does anybody know the guy's email address? He said he was taking orders so it should be out there somewhere, but I couldn't find it. Hopefully he could tell me more about the rods I found...

Well if you can't find it on the website then I would assume that's so for a reason...

Hello hwang21,

Are you talking about the picture right above your post?

Best,

Joe N.
Why point with a 3 inch finger when you can point with a 5385600.69 inch laser beam?

Hello hwang21,

So when have they started to make razor blades out of plastic?
Plus the burn marks around the holes are the same color that metal makes when it gets very hot.

Joe N.

Well spotted Joe!

The razor blade is inded metal, what else could it be?
The holes (some multiple closely spaced) are from a Neodymium rod laser pumped by 12 strobe lamps and a brace of many photoflash capacitors..
There is a degree of pulse shaping using simple inductors, no cooling was used and after a weekend of blasting holes in various metal objects the Neodymium rod fractured.
I have another on the way, and the next demonstration will be a film clip, at least I still have a few packets of razor blades left!
All done on a tiny budget and used or surplus equipment!

Do you know where I can get some fairly inexpensive mirrors for a laser rod like that? As I said in another post, I found an Nd:YAG rod for about $40, but I can't seem to find any suitable mirrors for less than $100. Could I just use a "normal" mirror on the back and then only have to pay for the 50% mirror in the front?
